What is the best regimen for perioral dermatitis?

Perioral Dermatitis Suggested Regimen

Perioral Dermatitis can be very frustrating and complicated to address and often requires treating many different components in order to fully heal. It is important to note that chronic skin conditions, such as PD, can take a very long time to correct, which will depend on the severity of the imbalance.
Perioral dermatitis is a facial rash that tends to occur around the mouth. Most often it is red, dry, and slightly scaly or bumpy. Any itching or burning is usually mild. It may spread up around the nose, and occasionally the eyes (periocular dermatitis).
    1. The first step is to cut out/avoid the following ingredients in your products:
      1. Harsh detergents/foaming agents that strip the barrier of the skin.
      2. Heavily preserved products that throw off the microbial balance of the skin.
      3. Oral care products that contain fluoride and sulfates (SLS); Good oral care brands are Jason, Spry, and Rinse Well, look for paste and rinse that contain xylitol, it helps break up biofilms caused by bacteria in the mouth area. We also suggest gargling with warm salt water and using saline nasal rinses regularly.
      4. Sunscreens that contain chemical blocking agents - use only SPF formulated with non-nano zinc-oxide only for its anti-inflammatory benefits
      5. All topical products which contain essential oils as they can cause sensitization; Essential oils are powerful plant compounds that have therapeutic qualities but are not appropriate for compromised skin or barrier dysfunction
      6. Harsh exfoliants and acids in your regimen until the condition improves; For DIY masking use plain, organic, full fat, live culture yogurt to cleanse or mask, as well mix with manuka honey or can use manuka honey alone to mask. Try to support a whole food, healthy diet, focusing on glut health, anti-inflammatory foods. Often these symptoms stem from an internal imbalance.
    2. Next, modify your regimen:
      1. In the beginning, cleanse once per day at night with the Pure + E.O. Free Oil Cleanser (rinse with only water in the morning)
      2. Tone AM+PM with Balancing HypoTonic
      3. Moisturize AM+PM with Barrier Restore Serum
      4. Use zinc oxide based sunscreen, like our Everyday Coverage Tinted Sunscreen SPF 30.
We advise sticking to a very simple and strategic regimen. Follow the regimen for a minimum of three months, it will take this long for the skin to fully utilize the ingredients and heal, bringing the barrier back into balance.
After a few weeks to a month,
you can start to add additional products one at a time to your regimen. Below is the full suggested regimen for atopic dermatitis:

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRODUCT USAGE
AM
  1. A morning cleanse is not necessary if you properly cleansed your skin the night before — simply rinse your face with water, alternating between warm and cold temperatures. Our cleansers do not remove the skin’s natural oils, so if you feel the need to cleanse more than once per day, you may do so without harm (see PM Step 1 if needed).
  2. Shake Mist or Tonic well. Lightly mist or saturate a cotton pad with Tonic and swipe over the face/neck/chest avoiding eye contour area.
  3. Apply Serums. Shake well. Apply 1-2 pumps of each onto face, neck, and chest immediately one after another, in the order listed above.
  4. Immediately following the serums, apply ¼ dropper full of Oil, warming between the palms and spread over the skin.
  5. While the oil is still damp on the skin apply Everyday Coverage Tinted Sunscreen directly after oil by applying 1-2 pumps, warming between palms, applying evenly over the skin.

PM

  1. It is important to remember that cleansing is the daily removal of sunscreen, makeup, and debris. At night, shake while holding the cleanser nozzle closed with the thumb. Dispense one pump of Cleanser and warm between hands. Using the first three fingers, draw small circles over the face/neck/chest, adding water as needed to create slip (1-2 min). Rinse thoroughly.
  2. Shake Mist or Tonic well. Lightly mist or saturate a cotton pad with Tonic and swipe over the face/neck/chest avoiding eye contour area.
  3. Apply Serums: Shake well. Apply 1-2 pumps of each onto face, neck, and chest immediately one after another, in the order listed above.
  4. Immediately following the serums, apply ¼ dropper full of Oil, warming between the palms and spread over the skin.
